Micah House Newsletter
August 2014

Welcome from the Micah House Board President
As we celebrate 25 years of Micah House, I am reminded of the many ways Micah House has been truly supported by the Temple Micah Community. Without the guidance of Rabbi Zemel and his urging a small group of congregants to follow the lead of the "One Congregation, One Home" movement to explore the possibility of a Micah House, this important program may well have never come into being.

And 25 years later, Rabbi Zemel continues to be an important voice in our program, as we hear in his introduction to the Micah House video we produced this year in honor of our anniversary.

This past Spring, we had a record number of Temple Micah parents, Machon Micah students, and Temple Micah members participate in the annual Micah House Walk. Prior to the walk, everyone met in the Social Hall to preview the Micah House video and meet a Micah House alumna and the Micah House Case Manager, as you will read more about in this Newsletter.

Other members of the Temple Micah Community also participate with Micah House in important ways.

While serving as the Temple Micah Music Director, Teddy Klaus also moonlights as our newest "go to" repair guy for the house, and we are truly grateful to him for all of his help.

Earlier in the summer, the current B'Nai Mitzvah class spent a weekend morning at Micah House to weed and beautify the front and back yards at the house.

Rabbi Josh Beraha, Temple Micah's Director of Congregational Learning, has also taken the time to visit Micah House, meet the Micah House residents and case manager. He has also been discussing with Micah House Board members ways in which Machon Micah and Micah House can work together more closely in the coming year.

We also look forward to your continued support of Micah House in the coming year.

Save the Date for Our Service and Special Dinner

This fall we will continue our 25th anniversary celebration with a Temple Micah/Micah House service on Friday, October 17. After the service, we will enjoy dinner and a panel discussion on the topic "Addiction and Afterwards." Please mark your calendars to join us for this special evening and look forward to an email about how to purchase tickets to the dinner.
 Celebrating Summer With a Barbecue!

We enjoyed another summer BBQ this year, and Micah House was full of residents, alumnae, our case manager Cynthia, board members, and our friends and family. It was a great chance to enjoy each others' company and some delicious food!

Honoring Our Residents' Successes

All four women living in Micah House have steady employment and are maintaining their sobriety. We are proud of them and grateful to their strong networks of family, friends, sponsors, and others--including Cynthia, our Micah House case manager.

Valencia has spent a lot of time with her family this summer. She has visited North Carolina, Richmond, and Six Flags. She is enjoying 17 months of sobriety.

Candice has been working hard on her career as a security guard and has taken several courses to enhance her job skills. She will travel to the Bahamas this September--a wonderful gift from friends in honor of her sobriety.

Lajuanna has also spent time with friends and family this summer, and has visited Six Flags. Lajuanna loves to cook; she's prepared several meals on the grill for her Micah House family.

Our newest resident, Felicia, is working hard, enjoying time with friends and family, and looking forward to celebrating one year of sobriety.

Fun in the Sun at Micah House Walk

The Micah House Walk this May allowed supporters of all ages to meet Micah House's case worker and a former resident, and watch a short video about the history of Micah House. It was a beautiful day and raised funds to help maintain Micah House and its programs.

We Have Amazing Volunteers.
Could You Join Them?

It takes a village to keep a home in tip top shape. Many thanks to our villagers, for coming to the rescue and helping out with recent home- maintenance and other issues. Teddy Klaus has many talents beyond bringing us his wonderful music. He is terrific with a hammer and a nail, and can fix almost anything. Thanks to Teddy for changing the door locks and a big thanks to Alan Cohen and David Pansegrouw for helping rid the house of some minor critters. Your willingness to continue to make Micah House a "home" for the residents is tremendously appreciated. A big thanks to Rob Sugar for donating the creative signage that added to the festive mood of the Micah House Walk. The Micah House Board and the residents of Micah House give a resounding "Todah Rabah" to all of you!

If you would like to see your name in this space in the future, there are two ways to get involved. The first is if you have home maintenance skills. Contact info@micahhouse.org to tell our board about your talents ge(are you a plumber? roofer? painter?) and we'll keep your information on file in case it's needed. Secondly, might you like to serve on the Micah House board? We have space in our 2015-17 board class for people who can attend meetings every other month and are interested in fundraising, communications, resident relations, and home maintenance. Please contact info@micahhouse.org to learn more!
